Burn - Sons of Kemet

Burn - Sons of Kemet

At random of my Parisian wanderings at the beginning of the year, I fell on a concert announcement in the Sunside jazz club with drummer Seb Rochford.
I have been very impressed by his play when I have seen him accompanying pianist Bojan Z in Cabaret Sauvage a few years ago and then saxophonist Andy Sheppard in the Sunset jazz club.
So I noted the name of the band: « Sons of Kemet »

It is only this summer that I listened to their album « Burn » and I did not really expect this type of music.
This very unusual group consists of Shabaka Hutchings in saxophones and clarinets, Oren Marshall in the tuba and two drummers: Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford. Thus I expected a very free sound.

Result is totally different.
It is in fact a learned mixture of melodies, subtle and heady, with copper-colored and rhythmical tones deserving of a big brass band, and some free passages giving to this music even more amplitude. Africa is omnipresent there with the rhythmic background sound producesd by the association of both drums.

An explosive english band!

Listen to « The Itis » from album « Burn » of Sons of Kemet. You will find other great tunes of this album in last July selection.
